If you are driving, there are a few things to keep in mind:
A new
highway from Cancun to Tulum is complete so the drive is now very safe. The
worst danger is when you turn left off of the highway into whatever town you are
going to - if possible, pull over to the right and let cars go by first, then
make your left turn. Many Mexicans consider a left turn signal to mean, "it's
all clear, go ahead and pass me". You might use an arm signal along with your
turn signal to play it safe.
Left Hand TurnsTurning left off Hwy 307 is very tricky. The left hand
blinker does not mean the guy in front of you is turning left. Instead, he's
telling you that it's OK for you to pass him. So, if you want to turn left,
first put on your left hand blinker then pull your car over to the right onto
the shoulder, as far as possible, and wait for all cars behind you to pass. When
it is clear in all directions you are free to go left.
Highway PassingIt is cutomary, though not mandatory, for a slower car
to move onto the shoulder of the road to allow those behind to pass. When doing
so, check carefully for animals, bicycles and pedestrians who are using the
shoulder. I would caution against this at night as it is VERY hard to see
pedestrians.
In addition, always use a seatbelt. And remember, you are
in a foreign country, so take it easy! There is no need to rush. (You're
supposed to be on vacation, remember?!)
Gas StationsThere is only one type: PEMEX. They do not accept credit
cards. They are located in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen (has more
than one), Puerto Aventuras and Tulum. |
